Volume One
By Paul Rechnitzer
Nonfiction. 298 pages, 8.5x11 softcover, black-and-white photos, eight color plates, index
Across the northern Idaho wilderness came the Northern Pacific in 1883 following a route sought by Lewis and Clark but found by David Thompson. Before the turn of the century, Jim Hill created the Great Northern, blazing a shorter transcontinental route. Through the same country came D.C. Corbin, connecting the Canadian Pacific and eastern Washington via the Spokane International. At Sandpoint, Idaho, all three railroads passed within a mile of each other. This remarkable concentration of pioneer railroading is still alive and well.
